Visiting Newport, RI in Fall: High Season Fun at Off Season Rates

Nora Beane
If you can arrange to visit Newport, RI in the fall you aren't likely to ever regret the time spent here. Living in Newport, RI for a full calendar year with my family and also having scores of day trips taken to Newport, RI over my lifetime I would willingly encourage those who have the time and the money to consider visiting Newport, RI in the fall.

That's not to say Newport, RI isn't incredible in summer when water sports are at a peak and music festivals abound. But there is something special about visiting Newport, RI in fall that is hard to duplicate or to forget.

With the exception of the weekends, when crowds of shoppers still find their way to Newport, the crowds for the most part are way down. This means that you can walk the beach, picnic along the shore, try your luck at the Newport Grand Casino, even visit the most famous Newport Mansion, the Breakers ( open all year long except for Christmas and Thanksgiving) without being jostled or crowded by lots of other tourists. Anyone who has had the chance, as I have. to experience touring around Newport during the summer and the fall will tell you how wonderful the fall is. No you won't likely go swimming but you may catch a day when you can paddle along the shore and feel the warmth of the sun.

Visiting Newport off season in the fall also means that you are very likely to encounter the some great bargain price Certainly some of the smaller shops and restaurants are closed except on weekends, even during the week you can still discover plenty of places to shop along Bellevue Avenue, Bowen's Wharf and all along Newport's harbor. What I have always enjoyed most is the great variety of shops and boutiques that you can discover if you take the time. Best of all most are located in two or three concentrated areas within the confines of Newport. Shopping can become a real treat when the crowds are down and because you are shopping off season the prices are extremely competitive giving shoppers some great bargains.

If the low crowd volume and bargain prices aren't enough to lure you to visit Newport, RI in the fall, then add to your consideration the fact that Newport is of course in New England and has plenty of fall foliage to offer. What is compelling about the fall colors when you are visiting Newport, RI is the fact that the colors are highlighted by the sun off the water which of course dominates the Newport scene. Because Newport, RI is surrounded by water you will also likely get the benefit of slightly warmer temperatures than can be found back on the mainland.
This makes walking, horseback riding, golf and tennis much more enjoyable well into the fall.

To spruce up the time your are spending visiting Newport in fall you can choose from lots of special festivals and fairs. On the waterfront alone you can check out the Newport Waterfront Irish Festival from Sept. 16-19, Tastes of Rhode Island from Oct. 2-3 and the Newport International Oktoberfest being held this year from Oct 9-11. This is only a small sampling of the many special events held throughout the fall on Newport.. You can browse to find festivals geared to your own special interests at the official Newport, RI website.

There's no reason to wrap up your vacationing time at the end of August, not when there is so much fun to be had by visiting Newport, RI in fall.
