Visiting Savannah, Georgia

Visiting Savannah, Georgia has always been a dream of mine, and even though I don't live there, I still think it's the most warm, gracious and beautiful city in the South.

The city, the people and the culture has a certain "je ne sais qua" about them, that will draw you back time and time again.

I believe this is one place you should put on your list of things to do and places to visit before you die. You will not be disappointed by the city, the food, the shopping, or the sightseeing.

With over 150 festivals a year, and I'm sure you can arrange your visit around one of them!

Savannah, Georgia is filled with history, and it's all there waiting for you to uncover. Please enjoy a brief list of the must see places to go, when you visit.

The Historic District

You will absolutely love the Historic District, where you can tour by horse drawn carriage or by walking. The District has 1,200 or more historic buildings that have been completely restored, so you will have the opportunity to see these beautiful buildings as they stood when they were originally built.

River Street

This is where you will find family restaurants and some of the most fun places to shop. You can browse the shops or take a streetcar ride along the entire length of River Street. You will find people here year round, and it's one the places you shouldn't miss.

Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park was the first park created in Savannah and can be found in the heart of the Historic District. It is also where you will find the romantic Forsyth Fountain, a cast iron fountain created in 1858, that can be located on the north end of the park. This is one of the most poplar attractions in Savannah.

Owens-Thomas House

You can begin you tour at the original Carriage House, which has one of the earliest urban slave quarters that is still intact. There is also the Museum Shop, the Regional Art Gallery, and an elegant garden located in the courtyard.

You enter the main house from the garden, and once inside, you will see beautiful European and American collections that date from 1750 to 1830.

Tybee Island

What a beautiful place to visit. Tybee Island is a barrier island located about 20 minutes east of Savannah. Here you will discover Tybee Island light house station, salt marshes, forts, museums, hotels, cottages, bikes you can rent, kayaks, galleries, shops and restaurants.

There is something for everyone, and everyone will have fun on this amazing island. It's romantic, and has miles of beach to travel.

Bonaventure Cemetery

This cemetery is a special place to visit. It's serenity is only surpassed by the Spanish moss covered trees, and the Wilmington River which it sits next to.

While you're there, visit the gravesite of composer Johnny Mercer, who died in 1976. He is buried in his family plot, that happens to be next to the Savannah River, which inspired the words to his popular song Moon River.

Georgia Queen Riverboat

The Georgia Queen Riverboat is just one of the boats that will take you on a cruise down the Savannah River. It offers daily sightseeing and dinner cruises all year long. It also offers a moonlight entertainment cruise, a Monday gospel dinner cruise and a murder afloat mystery cruise.

This 600 passenger, triple-decker boat operates under Coast Guard regulations and adheres strictly to these requirements. It is also climate controlled for year round comfort.

Savannah has a lot to offer. Of course I can't list everything here, because I don't have the space, but when visiting Savannah, Georgia, make sure you at least visit the places listed above.

You're in for a treat and a surprise. Don't spend a few days there. Spend at least a week. There's too much to see and a few days would not do Savannah justice.
