Jack Rella
New York City is a Mecca of things to do and see, with tourist attractions on just about every corner. From Soho to Long Island, visitors to the city can enjoy the many attractions that make up this thriving metropolis all year long. Art lovers will especially enjoy the many art galleries that litter the city. Some of them you may know and some of them are hidden gems that you may never have known existed. Here are some of the best art galleries in New York City that we think you will enjoy.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Probably the most famous of all art galleries in the city, the Metropolitan Museum of art has featured past exhibitions of famous artists and treasures, one of the most well known being the collection of artifacts from King Tutankhamen. Admission is free to museum members and children under the age of twelve. If you are not a member, the museum asks for a recommended donation. In addition to the art works that are always on display, the Metropolitan Museum of Art also offers talks, concerts and lectures on a regular basis. Handicapped accessibility is available.

The Museum Of Modern Art (MOMA)

If you like art that is a little more modern, then this museum, founded as an educational institution in 1929, will be more to your liking. Many of the displays found here are contemporary and MOMA offers in addition to its gallery a library, archive, and conservation laboratory. It is considered an international center of research and is supported by scholarships and publications. Every age range is welcome and there are exhibits at MOMA that will appeal to all types.

Lurhing Augustine Gallery

This art gallery was founded in 1985 by Lawrence R. Luhring and Roland J. Augustine in an effort to represent a group of artists from around the world. Exhibits on display include but is not limited to: painting; drawing; sculpture; video; and photography. Some of the artists whose work is displayed here is Duchamp, Richter and Judd. They also specialize in the resale of 20th century work by artists such as Picasso, Pollock, and Warhol. They are part of the American Art Dealers Association and follow strict standards when reselling pieces of artwork for their clients.

American Folk Art Museum

The art of early Americans is preserved here in this 30,000 square foot, 85 feet tall building. Over 5,000 pieces of artwork - such as paintings, drawings, sculpture, photographs, 3D objects, and more - are displayed here in an effort to preserve the cultural heritage and history of America. The gallery is open to the public for free on Friday's between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. There is also a shop available for souvenirs that range from handcrafted toys to jewelry.
