Visting Astoria, Oregon

Julia Jean

Astoria, Oregon is a wonderful place to visit. It is quaint and historical as the Colombia River runs through til it meets the ocean. There are many things to do there as well. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which was fairly new. We had a room with a fireplace and a view of the Colombia River and the 4 mile bridge that goes over the Colombia River to Washington state. That itself, is a nice drive.

There is a Coast Guard maritime museum that is a must to visit. While we were there, they had a Viet Nam display that was going to end that weekend. It had the canvas that the men slept on and which they wrote on while on the ship headed to Viet Nam. There was also much more to it than that.

The Funzel house is there to visit as well. I never did get to go through it, but would of really liked too. There is a lot of history in that house as well.

You must go to the Column. It gives you a bird's eye view of all of Astoria and the Colombia River and you can see for miles. It is traditional to buy a paper airplane at the gift shop and fly it off the top when you reach it. The climb may be difficult for some and there are some resting platforms to stop and catch your breath if needed.

You can watch the ships come in from the ocean and head to Portland. There is a restaurant called Under the Bridge Cafe and Bistro. It was nice to eat at and you can see the River as well from the restaurant.

It is beautiful in Astoria. It was a little foggy during the morning, but that broke later in the day. I think it is a trip well worth taking.
