The best thing about Vita pickled herring is its texture. Vita uses high quality, dense herring for its pickled herring, whereas other brands seem to use fish that is limper and flimsier than the herring used by Vita. Since a good portion of the pleasure on gets from eating pickled herring is a result of the texture of the fish itself, the quality of the herring used by Vita is the primary factor in why Vita is the best picked herring in the American market.
The herring fillets that Vita uses in its pickled herring are cut into largish squares that are the perfect size to put atop crackers or traditional Wasa crisp rye bread. I often eat my Vita picked herring with Wasa bread, some mild cheddar cheese, topped with a large slice of Vita pickled herring. While non-Swedes may find that this combination requires a sort of taste bud Gestalt-shift, for Swedes this combination is perfectly delectable. If you are unable to locate any Wasa crisp bread, then any ordinary rye bread will work well in its place, or even Saltine crackers in a pinch will help to bring out the flavor of the herring and the briny wine sauce.
Vita pickled herring is also available in a sour cream sauce, in addition to the standard wine sauce variety, but I find that I prefer the Vita pickled herring in wine sauce over the pickled herring in sour cream. Herring can be a particularly good food to eat while dieting due to its high protein content and high level of Omega 3 fatty acids, but the pickled herring in sour cream will defeat the purpose of using Vita pickled herring as a part of a healthy diet.
In conclusion, Vita pickled herring is the best pickled herring commonly available in the American food market. Vita has been making its pickled herring since 1898, so they have the experience to make sure the herring turns out right. And from year to year, the Vita pickled herring has stayed exactly the same as it has always been: delicious and delectable.
