The rate of their menstrual flow can vary from one woman to the next. In fact, your menstrual flow might differ from month to month. Most months, your menstrual flow might be relatively light. But, some months, your menstrual flow might be much heavier than what's normal for you. So much heavier that it can actually be a little frightening.
So, what qualifies as a heavy menstrual period?
Having a menstrual flow that's slightly heavier than normal isn't all that unusual. But if you have to change your tampons or menstrual pads more than once every hour or so, then you are definitely experiencing a heavy menstrual period.
Should You Be Worried?
Almost every woman has experienced a heavy menstrual period at some point. And some women experience heavy menstrual bleeding during almost every period.
Often, a heavy menstrual period is nothing to worry about. However, there are times when heavy menstrual bleeding is a sign of a more serious medical condition. You should see a doctor if you experience any of the following.
* Along with a heavy menstrual flow, you are passing blood clots, which you have never done before.
* During your period, you experience dizziness. Or you experience feelings of extreme weakness or fatigue.
* You've had periods that are more than 45 days apart. Having a menstrual cycle longer than the average, which is 28 days, can be perfectly normal. But going more than 45 days without having your period could be cause for concern.
* You experience bleeding between periods.
* You experience severe menstrual cramps that aren't alleviated by pain relievers.
If heavy menstrual bleeding interferes with your daily life, this is also cause to see a doctor. They could help you find ways to decrease your menstrual flow.
Are You Getting Enough Vitamin C?
Vitamin C isn't just good for keeping colds away. It can also help reduce heavy menstrual bleeding.
About a week before your period is due to begin, start taking 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams of Vitamin C per day. Continue taking your daily dose of vitamin C until your period ends. This should help reduce your menstrual flow.
But, remember, before you start taking supplements, check with your doctor to make sure it's okay.
A heavy menstrual period is usually nothing to worry about. In fact, for many women, a heavy menstrual flow is perfectly normal. But, with a simple home remedy, you might be able to lighten your menstrual flow, and alleviate some of the discomfort and inconvenience it can cause.
