Vitamin D: The Super Vitamin of 2011

New research indicates that vitamin D intake can help prevent common allergies to mold. Many people unknowingly breathe in a fungal organism (mold) called aspergillus fumigates. Breathing in this type of fungal organism can cause a severe allergic reaction in individuals who suffer from asthma or Cystic Fibrosis. This mold is extremely common in many households and can often be found in bedroom pillows. This mold growth can be kept to a minimum if moisture levels are kept down in the home, but it can still prove to be very dangerous for some unsuspecting individuals.

According to a study conducted by LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, researchers found that vitamin D reduced the production of the protein that caused an allergic response to the mold, as well as it increased production of proteins that promote tolerance to the mold. That being said, taking vitamin D can help prevent and treat an allergy to mold.

Vitamin D is also extremely effective in helping to build up a healthy immune system. Vitamin D can be used as a hormone modulator. One way this type of mold affects the human body is that it can cause an infection that can travel from the lungs where the mold spores are inhaled to other parts of the human body, including the blood vessels and organs.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common throughout the United States. One of the most common ways to get a healthy amount of vitamin D is with healthy exposure to the sun. That means spending 15 to 20 minutes per day in the sun while wearing appropriate skin protection. Some studies show that even individuals who live in a colder climate can spend enough time in the summertime to gather vitamin D for their body that will last all year long, even during the winter months.

Experts agree that everyone should be taking 35 IU's per pound of body weight of vitamin D per day. To check to see if you're getting enough vitamin D, have you blood tested at your doctor's office. Ideally, you should have 50ng/ml.

Drinking green tea in conjunction with taking a healthy amount of vitamin D can help boost bone structure and strength. Vitamin D is extremely important for bone health. Children who are deficient in vitamin D can develop many types of disorders that can lead to the weakening of the bones, fractures and skeletal deformities.
