Vitamins and Minerals: An Overview

Norah Faith
There are so many different vitamins and minerals in the food that we consume. Each of these vitamins and minerals protect us from sickness and disease. This vitamin filled food is also generated into fuel by, and for, our bodies. Even though the food we eat has all these different vitamins and minerals, it is not always enough for our bodies. Most people don't have a perfect diet and some bodies just simply need more of certain vitamins to survive. The body needs several types of vitamins and minerals to function properly. Most of these vitamins and minerals can be gotten from the food you eat, but that depends on what your eating. Your diet is very important from the stand point of what vitamins and minerals you are getting. You need to be eating a balanced diet, including all of the food groups in your daily menu. When your diet is balanced you will get the vitamins and minerals that your body needs; resulting in properly functioning body.

So what do you do when you're not getting the vitamins and minerals you need? You think your diet is balanced and it maybe, but your body just isn't functioning properly. This is why people take vitamin and mineral supplements. When your diet is not giving you what you need, then you should look into getting supplements.

Regardless where you get them, vitamins and minerals are a must. You can't function without them. Vitamins and minerals also help fight disease and keep you from getting sick. Vitamins and minerals allow your cells to break down illnesses and disease. Your cells need these vitamins and minerals to do their job. The cells take the vitamins and minerals and they strengthen themselves in order to block out sickness and disease. The cells build barriers inside you. These are what block and prevent illness and disease.

Now that you understand the importance of vitamins, you should look into your diet. Look at what you eat daily. Make a log of what you eat every day for 2 weeks. Take your log to a doctor or a health expert. Asked them to tell you what you're lacking and if they can advise you on which vitamins and mineral supplements you should be taking.

Balancing your diet and trying to get all the vitamins and minerals you need is a long and subtle task. Be patient. Watch your body and notice the different reactions you get when you eat a certain meal or when you take supplements. Your body will help indicate what you need.
