Viva Laughlin - 2 Episodes and It's Cancelled

Terri Pray
CBS musical drama Viva Laughlin has become the first casualty of the new season. After only two episodes, the premier on Thursday 18th October, and a second episode on Sunday 21st October, the ratings were so dismal that CBS is canceling the show and no more episodes will be shown.

Instead CBS will be showing re-runs of CSI for this coming week, and then the new season of the Amazing Race will occupy this last slot of the season. Laughlin fared so badly that it only managed to hold onto a dismal 40% of the CSI audience on Thursday night which effectively bombed the show.

With stars like Hugh Jackman, better known for the X-Men and other movies including the children's movie, Flushed Away, Melanie Griffith of Working Girl, Stuart Little 2, and Lloyd Owen of Miss Potter, the show wasn't able to hold onto the audience. Either the plot line, or the way the music was worked into the show, just didn't do it for the audience in general.

Production on Laughlin, which was in the midst of filming episode 9 of the 13 episode series, was shut down today, and it is not clear if any more episodes will be filmed.

Having sat and watched the first two episodes, I'm disappointed that it is being cancelled. To me the way they worked music into the shows was a fun twist, but then again I'm not a main stream audience member and have a liking for the different and funky, which Laughlin promised to be. Also as a Hugh Jackman fan - well the only thing that would have stopped me from watching it was the cable going out! There, I said it, I was watching it because of Hugh!

Well, that's the reason I started, but then the music and the way the show was put together did attract me as well. Could it have used a little more work on the script? Yes, what new show doesn't?

But it's farewell to Viva Laughlin and we're left wondering, what is next on the chopping block for this season?
