Vladikavkaz Market Terrorized 09/09/2010

Suicide Bomber Targted Crowded Market

Jennifer Bove
In an area that is no stranger to terror attacks, many have been seriously injured and at least fifteen people have lost their lives. As of right now, there is no one claiming responsibility for the attack. There was another bomb found at the front gates that hadn't gone off and that are was evacuated

In past bombings, Islamist militants claimed responsibility. Islamist militants are seeking sharia-law, or Islamic law to be in effect there and have said they will continue to target North Caucasus' "economic targets". The area is mostly Russian Orthodox Christian. Although no group has claimed responsibility, the owner of the car used in the bombing and the man responsible for carying out the attack have both been identified. Their names are Dobriyev and Archiyev respectively.

In Vladikavkaz, the capital of the Russian republic North Ossetia has had attacks before, one of the worst attacks there was in 1999. The same market was targeted and at that time there were over sixty people killed and numerous others injured. The attackers in that case were both captured and convicted. While there have been no attacks as deadly, there have been many incidents especially ones against women for not following sharia-law.

President Boris Yeltsin said in a public address: "I apologize to the families of the victims, I apologize, because I carry the responsibility for it all,". He has vowed to fight against future violent crimes.

Please be aware the following video is very graphic. It really makes one wonder how anyone can perpetuate violence and claim it to be for good for anyone or anything.

I had not heard of this. Tragic and aweful news indeed.

I hadn't heard about the bombing. Why would the citizens of this region accept sharia law when it allows atrocities like this? Supporters of sharia law include terrorists and fanatics. Yeah, I bet they want that. Very sad.

So sad to hear about things like this. Nicely written, Jennifer.

When - if ever - is all this nonsense - going to stop? Powerful writing Jenn.

I am afraid we will be seeing a lot more of these type of attacks across the world as time marches on because the zealots and fanatics are slowly taking overtaking the peaceful masses.
