Vlasic has always been known for good pickles and Vlasic Zesty Dill Spears are no exception. We bought Vlasic Zesty Dill Spearsz in a 24-ounce jar. The jar has a blue lid with the now famous Vlasic Stork saying, "That's one CRUNCHY pickle!" I wondered how a stork got to be associated with pickles and found a great little history here: http://advertisingiconmuseum.org/inside/c2/3237067.html. The stork also makes his appearance on the blue label, holding a pickle like a cigar (ala Groucho Marx, who shares a similar voice to the 1970s TV incarnation, above the Vlasic logo. A gold seal to the right of the stork tells us that these pickles are "fresh pack" and have "great taste and crunch". Below the stork, and the product name backed in green, we are told that Vlasic Zesty Dill Spears have "robust dill flavor with a little zing."
Pickles in general have little or no nutritional value, and Vlasic Zesty Dill Spears are no exception. But the fact that they are also fat free and have only 5 calories per ounce (about ¾ or a spear) you can eat all you want. Even eating the whole jar would only give you 80 calories, so you don't have to worry about overdoing it!
If you look at Vlasic Zesty Dill Spears through the glass, the bits of red pepper and garlic floating about might make you think that these are bread and butter pickles. But they bear no resemblance to them in flavor. At first bite, they just taste like a good crunchy Vlasic dill pickle spear, but as the pickle juice washes over your tongue, there is a great little spicy kick of heat that only increases as you eat more.
Vlasic Zesty Dill Spears have improved on a classic, which isn't easy to do. They also won our daughter over, which is even harder! (She has now chosen Vlasic Zesty Dill Spears as one of her favorite snacks!)
So I, or should I say, we highly recommend Vlasic Zesty Dill Spears . . . if you don't mind a little heat!
Enjoy!
