VMA Awards 2010 Winners List: Are Lady Gaga's Awards Too Much?

The 2010 VMA Awards winners list can be summed up in pretty much one name, Lady Gaga. Of course, the Video Music Awards brought honor to 30 seconds to Mars, Justin Bieber, and Eminem to name a few, but Lady Gaga's unprecedented 13 nominations scored her an unprecedented amount of wins.

There are many critics of the winners list, and some say that it's not fair that Gaga got so many awards. On one hand, I can see their point. After all, there are thousands of musicians out there pumping out such great stuff. Shouldn't some of the VMAs go to smaller, indie typed bands or something other than the main stream A-listers?

Last year, Taylor Swift was the princess of the show, and this year it's Lady Gaga. I think though that unlike Swift, whose star power faded just a bit this year, Lady Gaga is just getting started. No matter what she does, she adds her own unique spin to it and gets everyone talking. That keeps everyone listening to her music, no matter how annoying radio stations, bloggers, or people say it is.

Just like the meat dress. If I showed up somewhere wearing a slab of beef on my head, I would be committed. However, Gaga does it and everyone calls it 'fashion' or 'art.'

This isn't a rant against Lady Gaga. She's a great artist. This is a semi-rant against the VMA awards, for allowing one single artist to pretty much dominate the show. It's not that Bad Romance wasn't good - early on I knew it was going to be a hit.It's not that she can't sing -she's got amazing vocals. It's that people in the industry need to be recognized.

I'm not the only one that feels this way. I have received countless comments on other posts, many of them expressing disdain for the VMAs. One commenter even noted that MTV likes to "beat dead horses" talking about how they oooh and aaah over Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga continually.

I will keep my lips zipped on the Biebs, as I too have been (secretly) struck by Bieber Fever. Don't tell my husband that I have the 16 year old's hit CD stashed in my glove box.

In all fairness, there are those who think that Lady Gaga deserves all the awards. Technically speaking, she does deserve them because she got them. However, she pushes the envelope, adds shock element to whatever she does, and is very unique. She's not the same ol singer, pop star, or boy band. She's an entity. You can't put her really in a category, except for by herself.
