http://www.vocabulary.com has 18 words per set and with each set, are definition matches, crossword puzzles, word finds and even fill in the blanks in order to help the student vary his/her knowledge and use of the vocabulary words used. All of these varied areas help the student polish and "exercise" for want of a better term, the different learning areas which need refreshed before the SAT proper.
The words are far from simple in nature, and in fact below is a list of the words used in session #1.
Session #1: SAT* Words #1 puzzle link http://www.vocabulary.com/topsat1.html
"abstract, aesthetic, benevolent, capricious, complacent, conciliatory, devious, diligent, discernible, dogmatic, eccentric, fallacious, indifferent, inquisitive, meticulous, pertinent, plausible, reticent"
Now if that list doesn't cause some of you to have second thoughts about your vocabulary expertise, try the other lists and see how you do on them! I found that as the lists progressed the vocabulary became more and more challenging but that the difficulty level progressed so smoothly that the average student would most likely not even be made aware of the increasing difficulty until near the end of the list.
To me, this is the hallmark of a good site, one that smoothes the way for learning in a non threatening, minimally stressful way. Near the bottom of the page are each listing of words and the puzzles that are geared to the list. http://www.vocabulary.com/topsat1.html And believe it or not, there are also puzzles geared toward Harry Potter http://www.vocabulary.com/VUwizard.html for that wizard lover in your house.
I would highly recommend http://www.vocabulary.com to anyone beginning to study for the SAT test. Though the total pages can seem overwhelming, the information is thorough and the lists of words with their puzzles, extremely helpful. And if truth be known, once a student begins with this site, it will move along far faster than the student believes upon first glance. Check it out for yourself or forward a link to someone you know with a SAT bound child in their life. Good luck!
