Vodka Martini was Not James Bond's Favourite Drink

And We Have the Stats to Prove It

The cumulative totals of all James Bond's drinks in both the novels and the movies show that Champagne was in fact the most common drink served to him. He drinks Champagne sixty five times in total. But if you combine Bourbon whiskey and Scotch Whisky as being one drink type, that would be top of the league with a total of ninety nine pours in the books and movies.

The Vodka Martini actually appears forty one times in the books amd movies. Gin or undetermined types of Martini come in with twenty one appearances.

The celebrated "shaken not stirred" line appeared for the first time in the book Diamonds Are Forever published in 1956 but wasn't in fact used by James Bond. His first use of the line didn't come until the book Dr No arrived in 1959. Sean Connery was the first movie Bond to use the line in Goldfinger (1964).

James Bond's preferred Martini recipe was spelt out in the book Casino Royale (1953). It read; "Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel". In fact this was the only occasion James Bond has been noted drinking a vodka and gin mix.

It has been reported that Ian Fleming himself prefered to drink shaken martinis made with gin until advice from his doctor caused him to switch away from gin to drink bourbon in later life.

The researched list of all James Bond's drinks as featured in the movies and Ian Fleming books can be found at AtomicMartinis.com.
