Vodka is a popular drink among college students and the older crowd. The popularity of vodka is in large part due to the variety of ways it can be mixed. Vodka works well as an ingredient in cocktails, mixed drinks, and straight-up shots.
The origins of vodka still remain unclear. Some people have suggested vodka was founded in Persia, while others have felt it was first made in Russia. Though the source remains unknown, it has been reported that the first known distillery was located in Khyinovsk, Russia in the year of 1174. Throughout much of the Middle Ages, vodka was used for medical purposes. Today, vodka makes up 70% of the alcohol consumed in Russia.
In Ukraine, vodka is known as Horilka. The Ukrainian horilka is composed from the whole fruits of capsicum. Some drinkers believe Ukraine's Horilka is stronger than Russian Vodka.
Vodka produced from Poland in the early days was used as a medicine. During World War II, vodka distilleries were taken over by the communist government of Poland. After the victory of the Solidarity Movement, private expansion had once again begun, and resulted in a sudden increase of distilleries throughout Poland.
Given the long history of vodka, it has been used with other ingredients to form a variety of mixed drinks. The list provided below illustrates a variety of popular mixed drink combinations.
