Volleyball Drills for Beginners

Drills that Build Consistency!

Position for Passing:

-Line up 3 passers in serve/receive

-Coach tosses a ball over the net

-Players keep hands behind their back

-Players must shuffle to where the ball is and let it bounce through their legs

-Teaches them to move their feet before they even think of passing the ball. These days most young players rely on their knee pads and fall to the floor or reach before passing. This teaches them to get to the ball with their feet first.

Dead Fish Drill:

-Split into 2 teams

-One team will serve while the other team moves to the other side of the court and lies down inside the court

-The serving team serves (1 at a time) trying to hit one of the players on the floor.

-Every ball that lands in the court = 1 point

-Every ball that hits a player on the floor = 2 points

-Every serve that goes in the net or out = -1 point

-Once whatever time limit you set has passed, switch teams and start over.

--This teaches them to serve with accuracy and how to serve under pressure. It makes it competitive and players really love this drill.

Pass-Set-Hit:

-A line of 2-3 passers in middle back (left back or right back works also)

-A line of 2-3 hitters in left front (middle front, or right front will work also)

-A setter at the target and shaggers on the other side

-Coach tosses balls to passers, passers pass to target, setters set to hitters, shaggers shag and place in the cart

-variations include coach hitting instead of tossing, moving hitters and passers to different positions, adding blockers/defenders on the other side.

Setters Triangle:

-one setter at the net (at the target)

-one catcher on the left front position

-one tosser in middle back

-tosser tosses to target, setter sets to outside position, catcher catches and tosses ball back to tosser

-after 15 good sets, switch setters

-teaches setting accuracy while giving setters many reps at one time

-variations include moving catcher to middle front or right front

Run Thrus:

-line of 3-5 girls at the net (at the left front position)

-coach tossing from right front position

-need a target and shaggers

-Coach slaps the ball, passers at the net run down the sideline while coach tosses toward baseline

-goal is to run through the pass and get shoulders all the way around the ball and facing the target

-go through 3-4 times and then switch out to new passes

-variations include going across the baseline, or up the sideline
