Volunteer as a Family

If you would like to spend time teaching your family the value of volunteering, there are several ideas that are great for children and adults. Helping the community clean up, doing outside work for residents who aren't able to and assisting the elderly will teach your children to enjoy volunteering. Community kindness is important for all children to know, so they are adults who feel like they need to aid others who can't do what they can.

There are many programs that assist the elderly, although a lot of them don't usually have children in the programs. If you would like to have your whole family volunteer, it's easy to do this on your own. Make a list of homes in your neighborhood that you know have elderly residence. Make snacks and each week visit one of the homes, have your children sing a song or take hand made crafts to deliver with the snacks. Children always have a wonderful way of cheering up an older resident of a community, so be willing to share the joy they produce.

Yard work is hard for many families, and volunteering your families time is very simple. Find a yard in your community that looks like it needs tending to and get to work. It is smart to ask the owners or renters if they mind you being on their property first. Take a lawn mower and have one person mow while the other pulls weeds and plants some flowers or seeds. If it's winter, take your children to homes in the neighborhood that need their walks shoveled and get to work for a few hours.

Community clean up is usually well known, but it also tends to only be an annual event. Take one block of your community each week and pick up trash. If you would like to donate a little money or have a power washer, offer to wash the outside of houses on that block. This helps the community look nicer one block at a time.

Get your kids involved early in taking notice of their community, and they will be better adults for it. You don't have to wear out your children, but a Sunday afternoon of pulling weeds at the neighbors never hurt anybody. Find things to laugh about while you work so your children realize that just because they are working, doesn't mean they can't have fun doing it. After the first few times of volunteering as your children what it means to volunteer and how it made them feel. Promote a positive attitude toward community kindness and your neighbors and family will love you for it.
