Much like exercise or meditation, it creates a sense of well being. When we focus on someone beside ourselves, experts go on to say it interrupts our tension producing patterns.

Community Action

According to Community Action's mission statement, Community Action works in partnership with the community to assist low-income people achieve self-determination. They exist to ensure that low-income people have a place to turn for help as they strive to get back on their feet and achieve a better life. Their vision is of a community that when hardship hits, no one has to face eviction, hunger, loss of utilities or healthcare.

Currently Community Action is looking for volunteers to assist Head Start pre-school teachers. Since many of the children speak only Spanish, both Spanish and English language skills are required. Volunteers will assist the teachers by reading and working with Head Start students. There are 20 volunteers needed. Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve

Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is a 710 acre Nature Preserve with a new Wetlands Education Center and exhibit hall. There are plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing, education, landscaping and habitat restoration.

Jackson Bottom Wetlands needs volunteers in the following areas: Habitat Restoration team, Greeter, Education Center Guide, and Nature Education Assistant working with children. You can call them at 503-681-6283, or visit their facilities at 2600 SW Hillsboro Hwy 219, Hillsboro, OR 97123.

Hillsboro Parks and Recreation

Hillsboro Parks and Recreation is committed to providing quality facilities, programs and services that bring people together and enhance the livability of the Hillsboro community. The City of Hillsboro Parks and Recreation Department recurits volunteers all through out the year. Here are a few positions they are looking to fill: After school sports instructor for middle school aged children and elementary school aged children, BLAST after school recreation instructor and park beautification.
