Kids who volunteer will tend to do better in school, be less likely to get into trouble and many times will be more compassionate to others around them.
There are many volunteer opportunities for kids, it is a matter of finding what a kid's interest is and what he or she enjoys doing and then finding a volunteer opportunity that meets those needs.
Here you will find a small sampling of possible volunteer opportunities for kids:
Volunteer Opportunity for Kids #1: Animal Shelter
This is one of my favorite volunteer organizations for kids, as long as the child enjoys animals, working with animals seems to be a favorite for kids. The local animal shelter near my home offers an extensive volunteer program for elementary age kids through high school age. My daughter was a volunteer at the shelter when she was in elementary school and she still talks about how much she enjoyed her time spent at the shelter. My daughter is currently in college and seriously considering a career as a veterinarian, there is no doubt in my mind that her passion for helping animals was reinforced when she was volunteering at our local animal shelter. It is important to check your local animal shelter to see if and what volunteer opportunities may be available for the youth.
Volunteer Opportunity for Kids #2: Hospital
Many hospitals are more than happy to have young people who are willing to volunteer, hospitals can always use help with delivering books or flowers to patients, having someone that is willing to talk to patients and giving companionship, work in the gift shop or any of the other multitude of jobs that are needed to be filled by volunteers. Hospitals are a great place for kids to learn communication skills, compassion and the meaning of giving to others.
Volunteer Opportunity for Kids #3: Nursing Home
A nursing home is an excellent place for the youth to connect with the more experienced members in our society and also gain an appreciation for those who have quite a bit of experience in life. Nursing homes can use volunteers who are willing to play card games or any type of games with the older folks. Also delivering mail is a fantastic job for a kid volunteer or any type of filing or office work is also appreciated at a nursing home.
Volunteer Opportunity for Kids #4: Library
Many libraries have youth volunteers and appreciate all the help they can get with cataloging and filing the hundreds of books that are returned everyday. Many kids are really good with using computers and may be a great resource for the computer lab. Each library has its individual needs but there are always volunteer opportunities at the local libraries.
Volunteer Opportunity for Kids #5: Museum
Not everyone has a museum near their home but if there is one close by, museums typically need volunteer help. Kids are a great resource for a museum because there are so many odd jobs that need to be done at a museum plus it can be an excellent learning opportunity for a young person.
