In New York City, there are many volunteer opportunities available for Senior Citizens, opportunities to help make a difference in other peoples lives, from young children to other senior citizens.
RSVP ( Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) is a national program where retired people aged 55 and over can find a way to volunteer in their community. While it is a Federal Program, it is administered at the local level and in New York City, it is administered by the Community Services Society. They need volunteers in all five boroughs and there are hundreds of different opportunities available, some requiring specific skills and some just requiring that you care. Check them out here http://www.cssny.org/rsvp/opportunities.html
Give them a call and they will match you to an organization where you can make a huge impact in peoples lives.

Volunteer NYC http://www.volunteernyc.org has hundreds of volunteer opportunities listed catabolized by the type. Yu can contact the organizations directly and pick one in your local area. There are opportunities listed here for all age groups, so maybe you can inspire some of your younger acquaintances to try and make a difference too. Just as an example, these are some of their current listings. The WEME Mainstream Nutrition and Health Center is looking for volunteers to help frail seniors with such things as shopping. The Fatherhood Program is looking for volunteers to work with young fathers, aged 16-25 helping them learn how to be a responsible father
and a positive influence in the lives of their children. Mount Sinai Hospital is looking for volunteers to great patients and their families and help them navigate around the hospital. Food Bank for New York City is looking for volunteers to work in different soup kitchens and food pantries in all five boroughs doing such things as helping package or distribute food or serve hot meals. Volunteers are needed to help take care of Riverside Park, so if you like the outdoor life style, this may be what you are looking for.
Many of these actively seek senior citizen volunteers for numerous reasons. Seniors have a life time of experience to share. They may have been in the same situation themselves at one time in their lives. Seniors are available hours that the working population is not and seniors are reliable. So get out there and shw them exactly what senior power is.
