Hospice - Hospice is there for patients who are seeing the last days of their lives and their families. Hospice volunteers are needed to help family members cope. Depending on the volunteers' background, services are needed to sit with patients while family members go out, help with household tasks, do arts and crafts or just be there for support and strength. Sav-A-Life - Troy's Sav-A-Life/Women's Life Center has been active in pregnancy testing and counseling for almost 30 years. There's always a need for volunteer counselors who are sensitive to the needs of women who need the services. Sav-A-Life offers free pregnancy testing as well as counseling. A nursing or counseling background would be helpful, but all that's expected to become a volunteer is compassion. They center staff supplies training for the rest. Habitat for Humanity - People team up to build houses for those in need. The Troy Habitat for Humanity mission statement sums it up this way: "Habitat For Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends." Museum and Art Center - Troy/Pike County is home to the Pike Pioneer Museum and the Johnson Center for the Arts. Both are open year round and offer the community a multiplicity of choices for entertainment. They bring a variety of exhibits and cultural activities to the Troy area. The Johnson Center for the Arts trains docents to professionally facilitate learning experiences in the gallery (334-670-2287).
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pike County is located in Troy. Big Brothers and Big Sisters recruit adults to mentor young people who have a variety of needs. They match Big Brothers with Little Brothers and Big Sisters with Little Sisters who spend time with them each month. The program targets families with children ages 5 to 14. Local Fire Departments in and around Troy/Pike County -Christmas is a beautiful time of year, but it can also be the deadliest when it comes to fire hazards. Volunteer Firefighters are trained members of their community who avail themselves any time of day or night if the need arises. Salvation Army - You will see them this holiday season. Salvation Army volunteers dressed in Santa suits ringing a bell and providing a kettle for monetary donations. You will see them, so why not be one of them for a few hours one Saturday before Christmas? This program provides clothing, toys and food to needy families in the community. Volunteers play a big part in bringing Christmas presents - to boys and girls who would have none otherwise. Post a CommentGreat ideas and we should all go out. Volunteers are invaluable, I was a hospice & palliative social worker and often times the workers aren't able to spend as much time as the volunteers can give in quality to one person. Thanks for reminding others that they can make a difference.
