PAWS Chicago is the largest no-kill shelter in the Chicago area. In fact, PAWS has become a model to countless shelters across the country. Although there is a small paid staff, the majority of work is done by a large group of dedicated volunteers. Located at 1997 N. Clybourn Avenue in Lincoln Park, PAWS is centrally located and close to many bus lines and the Red Line El.

If you love animals then volunteering at PAWS may be right for you. Volunteers take dogs for walks, play with the animals, help guests make adoption decisions and clean up the inevitable mess. Volunteers also help with paperwork, plan events and help with other office functions.

All volunteers are required to attend an orientation session. During this orientation you will learn about PAWS' history and mission and all of the volunteer opportunities will be explained. Additional training sessions may be required for some volunteer duties such as showing animals to guests and working as an adoption counselor.

After the orientation session you can volunteer as your schedule allows. PAWS has an online volunteer scheduling system that lets the volunteers pick the days and times they volunteer. Volunteering at PAWS is perfect for those of us with busy schedules.

All in all, PAWS is a terrific place to volunteer. The flexibility, friendly staff and knowing that you are helping dogs and cats that have had a tough life find a "forever home" make the time spent at PAWS rewarding and fun.
