Volunteering in Detroit, Michigan

Viktorya Hale
If you reside in the Detroit, Michigan area you know that the place can use some extra hands to volunteer. Detroit has risen to the number one place for crime in the entire country. That is pretty scary for the Detroit residents. Not to mention, the Michigan economy is declining, which is sad. There are many opportunities for volunteer work there so here are a few listings that you may want to check out when you get the chance.

Perhaps it is animals that you love. I am sure that the Detroit Zoo can use a helping hand. They recruit new volunteers between the months of February through June and September through October, so be sure to contact them during this time. You will be trained by the staff and any prior experience is not necessary. You must be at least eighteen years old and training is held during the spring and fall. Unfortunately, the volunteers at the Detroit Zoo are unable to either feed or handle the animals. For more information call (248) 541-5717 ext. 3806.

Do you love the youth and are wanting to help our children in some way? Maybe the Detroit YMCA is the right place for you. Currently there are about 2,200 people that volunteer at the YMCA, with a board of about 450 members. There are also volunteer coaches and club leaders that help build self esteem. There are ages 12-80 that volunteer. They consist of people of all traits and expertise, such as firefighters, teachers, doctors and lawyers. There is sure to be something for everyone. For more information you can contact them at (313) 267-5300.

There is always the Detroit Garden Center that may need a few extra hands. There is a summer program called Rise and Shine in the Alternatives for Girls, where there are two gardening classes. One is for the grades first to third and then there is one for fourth to fifth. Then there is the pot decorating program that you can also volunteer in. The children learn not only how to plant but decorate the pots. There are a few other programs that you may want to be involved in. For more information please contact (313) 259-6363.

You may also love the opera and want to volunteer at the Detroit Opera House. There are many ways that you can volunteer as an usher, ambassadors, office workers, outreach members and so may other ways to volunteer. You may also want to be a member of the Volunteer Association with a $35 annual fee, $25 for ushers and then there is a fee of $10 for students with a valid school I.D. For more information on volunteering for the Detroit Opera House call (313) 961-3500.

As you can see there are many ways to volunteer in Detroit Michigan, so thanks for your hard work and helping hand!
