Volunteering: It's Good for Your Soul!

Elizabeth Tabian-Sosin
With the New Year, I decided to try and make some changes. This was easier said than done. But, one of things that I thought I would try to do is, Volunteer. It can be very frustrating finding the time and energy to Volunteer when you have to juggle Work, Home and Children. Especially a child with special needs. But, I believe, eventually, I will persevere. At the moment, I am working on getting involved with the local Children's Museum, as well as a Women's Shelter for victims of domestic violence. Sounds like a lot? It is. But, I'll do it. Eventually.

Right now, I am curtailing my efforts by simply volunteering thru my use of the Internet. This seems like a better fit than actually having to leave the house and find 4 hours a week to physically be somewhere. The best part about it is, that I am able to do what I love and help out others at the same time. I have become involved with the Association For The Blind. I am working on Internet research devoted to helping those with all types of disabilities locate local resources for employment.

As the parent of an Autistic son, who is only 3 years away from being legally allowed to work, this is a huge step for me. While doing my research, I have found all kinds of resources which I am now sharing through this page: http://del.icio.us/autismwriter. I find that by doing this kind of research, I am helping my son get closer himself to being able to go out and work in a few years. It gives me hope that there are solutions out there for kids like him, and that he just may be able to live a normal life.

Volunteering helps me help others like him. Families that are looking for hope will benefit from my efforts. At least, I hope that they will. It's such a little thing really. But, if everyone did just a "little" thing, like mentoring a trouble teen, helping out at a convalescence home, or helping take meals to seniors, it could become a huge thing.

Volunteering helps you give back to your community. Who knows, someday, you may be the one that needs the Volunteers to help you. So, be someone's guardian Angel. Volunteer. It's good for your soul!
