In a city where the hurricanes just won't quit, there are many ways that you can spend your spare time, volunteering. There are homeless families and still many places that need to be repaired. What else would you want to do with your free time?

Volunteers of America in Greater New Orleans

Since the disaster of Katrina, the Volunteers of America have been rebuilding homes and families.A lot of the assistance is for the children and elderly of southern Louisiana. The Volunteers of America in New Orleans serves over 16 parishes. There has been a couple million dollars in grant money to aid in the rebuilding of hurricane victims. You can volunteer in the after school program or even just make a donation. If this looks like a place where you want to hang that volunteer work hat, then let's head on over to the site.

Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans, Louisiana

If you have a skill for building, roofing and construction, you may want to devote that extra time to the Habitat of Humanity. There are many ways that this organization can use you. You might want to work in construction or if that is not your cuppa tea, you can consider working in the office or with other projects. They are always looking for volunteers and ask that you work for at least one full day. If you think that you may be interested in this type of volunteering, please feel free to contact them on their site.

ACORN

This organization is dedicated to helping low income families rebuild their homes. They help with the gutting and cleaning of my homes that were effected by Katrina. Since 2005, there have been about 15,000 volunteers and well over 400,000 hours of volunteer time, total. Since then they have saved about 3,000 homes. City Park, New Orleans

Since hurricane Katrina, the City Park Of New Orleans has sustained over $40 million. Not only that, their staff has decreased to just 65 people, leaving them with virtually no time to restore the park. However, there is something that you can do. if you believe that making New Orleans beautiful again, you may consider volunteering here.
