Vonage Phone Service

Lisa Jones
When I moved to a new city and had no clue what serviced what in the area, I went to the internet and pulled up my city and state. The utility companies were listed on the community website.

I had two choices in a local phone carrier, At&t and MCI. I had never done business with either so I thought I would give MCI a try first. A couple months into their "unlimited" plan I started to notice I was being nickel-ed and dime to death. At&t called my home asking me to switch and one night and I just said yes. The plan they offered seemed too good to be true. Here I was again being nickel-ed and dimed. I do not call spending over $80.00 a month for a phone a good choice.

I kept seeing ads for Vonage and decided to look into it. I read all of the fine print and ever faq on the site. They were amazing. Here is where I thought "too good to be true" again, and passed on it. Another month went by having At&t and another bill, only larger than the month before. I didn't have a clue why they charged more or what for, they told me regulatory taxes and it was because of my state.
I was ready to pull my hair out.

Again I went to the vonage site. I was leery because it is connected through the internet. If anyone has used a voice messenger or internet phone you know there is a small delay in the information being sent from one end to the receiver.

Anyway, I ordered it. I only had to pay for the first month and the next month was free. An unlimited plan is 24.95 a month. I kept At&t just until I found out if Vonage worked or not.

I received my box a short three days later. I read the manual and installed it. Which really was simple. I immediately called my mom. She didn't notice any difference in it from land line phone with At&t. I called my sister and she had said the same. I was sold. The next day I canceled my At&t service.

Another piece of advice for people when you disconnect service from AT&T, they charge a disconnection fee. I never read it anywhere on their site or in any paperwork sent to me. They drafted $120.00 for disconnection fee from my bank account. I was furious. I called and argued and they told me someone had to manually disconnect it from the box outside my home. Unless the person was the size of a mosquito and flew only at night, then it didn't happen. The box is right outside of my office window and I am in here just about 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I should of fought it more but gave up. A lesson I learned very well.

To this day I am very happy with Vonage. I have had it almost a year now. I did order a second box, 2 months ago. A family member had to go over seas for a few months and international long distance is murder on a budget. I called Vonage and asked if there was anyway a box would work across seas. I was assured it would work world wide as long as there was a cable or dsl connection to it.

I got the box here just in time for him to leave. There was no problem with security at the airport with him having the box. It was brand new still in its plastic. The moment he arrived he set it up and called. It works perfectly. When I ordered it, I set it so he has a local phone number to mine. There are no international charges or anything and he got the unlimited plan. He calls home and all of family and friends daily without any problem. We can also call him without any extra fee's.

If you are looking for another phone service provider I highly recommend Vonage. Save yourself time, headache and money.

I love to read and even more love to write. If there is something to learn out there I am up to my elbows in it. Researching just about everything is only one of my many interests.  View profile
