VOTE NO! Iowa Judges and Same-sex Marriage Under Fire

Should Judges Be Ousted for Same-sex Marriage Decision?

Sherry Tomfeld
A huge late push in robocalls from GOP heavy weights are urging Iowa voters to VOTE NO on keeping the "activist" judges in their seats. Calls from Mike Huckabee and conservative Bob Vander Plaats were two of the robocalls going around the state on Saturday. Many Iowans agree with voting these judges out because of the same-sex marriage outcome in Iowa. A lot of Iowans feel they had absolutely no voice in Iowa becoming a state that allows same-sex marriage. They want to vote on that issue instead of having judges put it into effect on their own.

Is this push by conservatives against sitting judges working? It has definitely worked in drawing attention to the upcoming vote. There are questions that come with the no vote. Many Iowans will simply vote no on all judges, no matter what district. They won't know which judges voted for what, they will simply vote all judges out and start over in hopes to get the same-sex marriage halted in Iowa. Many good judges could be lost in an effort of this sort.

Assuming that Terry Branstad gets elected governor, what will he do? Will he use an executive order to stop same-sex marriage? Branstad has said time and again that he does not believe in using executive orders in that way.

What becomes of the same-sex marriages that have already taken place in Iowa? IF the governor uses an executive order to stop same-sex marriage, how does it affect those marriages? Will the voters of Iowa finally get the opportunity to vote on who should or should not marry in their state? Will the Constitution of Iowa undergo a final change?

Personally, I don't believe in same-sex marriage, that being said, I don't believe in activist judges running a state and putting into place rules that affect all Iowans. If Iowa is going to be a same-sex state, then Iowans voting for it should be how it gets there.

As for voting NO, I admit to voting no most elections cycles on the sitting judges. Is that fair? Probably not. Why do I do it? Because I don't want activist judges on "EITHER" side taking it upon themselves to put their agendas ahead of what my fellow Iowans want or need. I don't want to give complete power to any small group of people.

Iowa will be gaining conservatives this go around. We will most likely be saying Governor Branstad again. And that's okay with me. But Iowa is also front and center on same-sex marriage. How did we get here? Activist judges. Don't like it? Vote NO Tuesday and we'll start over

Marriage is a civil right. It's the responsibility of the judiciary to make sure that private citizens' civil rights are not being impinged upon by laws or other citizens. That's like asking Iowans to vote on whether or not slavery should be legal.

EVERY SINGLE IOWAN AND PERSON ON EARTH HAS THE RIGHT TO LOVE WHOMEVER THEY CHOOSE. I SEE ABSOLUTELY NO POINT IN TRYING TO SUPRESS ANYONE'S HAPPINESS! WHO ARE ANY OF US TO TELL SAME SEX COUPLES THAT THEY ARE WRONG? BEFORE YOU JUDGE SOMEONE ELSE TAKE A LONG LOOK IN THE MIRROR YOU ARE NOT NOR WILL EVER BE PERFECT, YOU SIN LIKE ANYONE ELSE DOES. THIS ARTICLE IS COMPLETELY ONE SIDED! GAY MEN AND WOMEN SHOULD AND WILL HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS HETEROSEXUALS! YOU MIGHT AS WELL DEAL WITH IT NOW BECAUSE IT WILL BE HAPPENING SOONER OR LATER! I AM VOTING YES! THESE JUDGES HAVE GIVEN HOPE TO SO MANY COUPLES WHO JUST WANT TO LIVE LIFE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG!

This is a great article. we vote, we pay taxes and we're told it's our duty,we have a voice. BUT. for what? our vote don't count, our tax dollars dosen't go for anything visable that can be seen. we're not asked to vote on something that concrnes our City or State. truth is our voice is silent.
