Vote for the Worst (VFTW) began in American Idol's third season in 2004. While some of VFTW's antics made news, it wasn't until the sixth season the website exploded in popularity. When Sanjaya Malakar's performances and wild hair styles alienated most of the viewing public, the website's support of Sanjaya firmly threw VFTW into the national spotlight.
VTFW has always attracted both hate mail and accolades from American Idol viewers. Some denounce the site as cruel and mean spirited, while others join in on the site's mission. Fans of those chosen as the "worst" may feel conflicted. Some adopt a philosophy of "a vote is a vote," and others send a barrage of hate e-mail.
How is the worst chosen? Bad singing is not enough for a contestant to be picked as the worst; in fact, sometimes singing isn't even considered.
"We vote en masse for the contestant that we feel provides the most entertaining performances that go against what the producers want in a winner and that annoy the viewing public," explains Web contributor thefunnystone.
What's considered an entertaining performance? According to VFTW, factors for choosing the "worst" include personality, dance ability (or lack thereof), rapport with the judges, and generally how irritating a contestant can be.
Tatiana Del Toro is already a controversial contestant. Despite some harsh critiques of her singing, the American Idol judges have passed her through into the top 36. Tatiana is known for her emotional outbursts, including wild, incessant laughing and a readiness to cry.
"She is absolute perfection," states the banner on the site.
Will VFTW be able to keep Tatiana on American Idol?
American Idol producers have likened Vote for the Worst to "a fly buzzing around a cow" and assures those concerned that the website doesn't have much influence on the voting process. On American Idol message boards, the name of the website is taboo.
Tatiana also faces fierce competition. Her group includes: Alexis Grace, Brent Keith, Jackie Tohn, Stephen Fowler, Ann Marie Boskovich, Casey Carlson, Michael Sarver, Stevie Wright, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, and Ricky Braddy. This group is the first to perform of the three groups. The three top performing contestants in each group will move into the top 12. A special wildcard show will determine the remaining three spots.
"It'll be a tough battle to get her in the top 12, but we'll sure as hell try," acknowledges VFTW.

Post a CommentHer character is a borderline case: you either like it or hate it, and I happen to like her cos she makes american idol entertaining, or more like a reality show (: Besides, her singing is good (I'm not saying it's GREAT - though she outperformed about half the people in the first round with THAT kinda song), and a few more rounds won't kill! It might even make American Idol more interesting! Don't make every year's season the same! Give her a break... she might really want this and maybe the way she expresses herself is a little more emotional than the average person (she might have gone through a lot? i don't know. WE don't know.), but then...does it all really matter? It's a good thing that she's dumping her slinky image to pursue something more decent right now. Let's just use this very FAIR view to judge the wildcard round.
Just drop the bias, and see how her performance hits the judges.
I wish I had heard about this! I couldn't figure out for the life of me why Sanjaya kept moving on! He was just so absolutely horrid it was ridiculous, it annoyed the absolute crap out of me! I'm glad there are people out there that think it's funny to sabotage things. *rolls eyes* - if they're getting this worked up over a TV show, perhaps they need something better to do with their time!
Great article! =)
well done her glad she is gone!
This kind of stuff is the reason I don't like American Idol. Good coverage though.
From what I've seen of AI this season, VFTW might be a fly buzzing around a cow chip rather than a cow.
I guess if it is all in good fun, it could be humorous!
awww, this is kind of sad.
