Paulding county and city officials in Georgia are hopeful the voters will agree with them that the county's sales tax should remain at 7 percent for six years, beginning April 1, 2011.

The Paulding County Board of Commissioners has voted unanimously to place this question on the July 20, 2010 ballot. Dallas and Hiram City Council members also have voted unanimously to ask the voters for this renewal.

The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) is used for long-lasting capital outlay projects such as road and park improvements and public safety enhancements.

An estimated $95 million is expected to be collected with the continuation of this one-cent retail sales tax over the six-year period, said Jayson Phillips, county attorney of Talley, Richardson and Cable in Dallas.

The revenue will be split with 87.16 percent going to Paulding, 7.2 percent to Dallas and 5.64 percent to Hiram. he added.

The current SPLOST - that has been in effect for five years - will expire on March 31, 2011.
