Two types of vulvodynia:
Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome: is when there is pain of the vestibule. The vestibule is the entrance of the vagina. This would include pain during intercourse or pain that comes during touch or when pressure is applied.
Generalized vulvodynia: is when there is pain in different areas at different times around the vulva. This pain can be constant or occur at different times. Touch or pressure may or may not cause the pain, but touch or pressure may make the pain worsen.
Symptoms include:
• Throbbing pain
• Rawness
• Painful intercourse
• Soreness
• Burning
• Stinging
• Itching
Symptoms can last for months to years and can vanish as quickly as they started. Vulvodynia is caused by injury or irritation, allergies, past vaginal infections, or localized sensitivity to the skin. Some women with recurrent infections such as yeast infections and vaginitis have a history of vulvodynia.
Vulvodynia is tested by having a pelvic exam performed. During a pelvic exam the doctor will look for any sign of infection or symptoms of vulvodynia. A Cotton swab test will also be performed to check for area of pain.
Vulvodynia is treated with medications such as anticonvulsants, antihistamines and tricyclic antidepressants. Biofeedback therapy is also used to help reduce pain. Local anesthetics are used to control pain. Surgery is used in cases where medication is not effective.
