W Sliced Dry Rubbed All Natural Uncured Bacon Review

The Pen
A few days ago I went grocery shopping at Trader Joe's in order to make a recipe. I needed bacon for it, and I usually buy a different brand sold at another store, but since I was there I just decided to buy a package of W nitrate free bacon.

Claims for
W Classic Sliced Dry Rubbed All Natural Uncured Bacon Review

I've never heard of the W brand but they claim that their bacon is made from their family recipe which starts with all natural pork that was raised without antibiotics & is wholesome fed without animal by-products in the feed. It was seasoned and massaged with natural spices and guaranteed pure and not chemically extracted or irradiated. The slabs of bacon then stand for up to 7 days, and then it's smoked with a mixture of apple and hickory. They claim it's smoked to create a unique aroma and flavor that enhances its taste.

Taste of
W Classic Sliced Dry Rubbed All Natural Uncured Bacon Review

This bacon comes in very wide, slices that are about 70% fat. But once I fried them in a skillet, they shriveled a bit, but they were still a good sized piece of bacon - they weren't as wide but they retained their length, which I liked.

Although the makers of this bacon really went to town bragging about the all the details that went into seasoning it, to me the taste wasn't much better than your run of the mill bacon. It was on par with Oscar Meyer's in my opinion.

I didn't notice any unique flavors like apple or hickory, it just tasted like plain ole bacon. And the bacon isn't sliced thickly so the meatier parts of it fried a bit tougher than I like. But the fatty parts were good as expected.

In the End...

I probably wouldn't buy the W brand again unless I had to. Let's face it it's bacon, so it was good. And it is a healthier option than most of the bacons sold with nitrates, and it has less fat. But it didn't have a unique flavor & I like thicker cuts. If it was my only option I'd buy it again, but I have another brand that I like better, so I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
