Waco: Visiting the Heart of Texas

Traveling down IH35 in Texas will bring you to a town full of fun and adventure. You will not be disappointed in what you find. It is well worth the drive to get there. If you would you like to visit museums, see the home of the Lady Bears, visit a zoo, drink Dr. Pepper, see memorabilia on Texas athletes, then Waco, Texas is the place to visit. Waco offers a wide variety of activities for families, singles, and seniors.

Waco is home to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & Museum at Fort Fisher. It displays history and heritage of the Texas Rangers dating back to the Old West. It also contains Indian artifacts and Western art. You don't have to travel far for your next stop. Near the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame is the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Take a walk inside to find sports memorabilia of known Texans. On display you will see items from George Foreman, Earl Cambell, Nolan Ryan, and others. If this isn't enough for you, then you can visit the Dr. Pepper Museum located in the original 1906 bottling plant. After touring the facility, stop by the soda shop and take a sip. It is sure to quench your thirst.

If you like touring historic homes, visit Fort House, East Terrace, McCullough House, or the Earle-Napier-Kinnard House. You can also take a stroll through Gov. Bill and Vara Daniels Historic Village. On display is an 1890's Texas village. You can visit the church, a hotel, saloon, cotton gin, and more. Located with the historic village is the Discovery Center. You can take a tour of the inside of a cave, walk over dinosaur bones, see a full-size grass house, and more. There are 17 discovery rooms for children and adults to tour. On your site seeing tour, stop by the Waco Hippodrome Theatre. It was built in 1914 and is a Spanish Colonial style building. This building is still being used today for theatrical productions.

Waco also offers visitors a chance to see a suspension bridge that was built in 1870, but is still in use. The original reason for building the bridge was to offer cowboys and cattle a place to cross the Brazos River.

For the young or young at heart, Waco has fun-filled activities for them too. Spend your day at the Cameron Park Zoo, a natural habitat zoo. If the heat get you down, make a splash in the Waco Water Park. It features two body slides, a lazy river, lap pool, whirlpool and more. Kiddie Land is another alternative for children to have fun. This is a mini amusement park. You can ride the train around the park, slide down the "super" slide, or enjoy watching your children having fun riding the mini ferris wheel.

Waco is now known as the home of the Lady Bears, Women's National Basketball Champions. Baylor University is one of the best higher educational univerisities in the US. If you are looking to continue your education, check into their degree programs.
