Waiting for Barack: VP Texting Just a Start on Citizens Involvement

I wait, I wait, and I continue to wait! So are millions of other democrats, independents, and progressive republicans who anticipate the text message that Barack Obama will be sending to his supporters shortly. I find myself holding my phone closely, checking every few minutes to make sure it is on high volume and that I had not accidentally turned it off. I don't want to miss this experience.

I had not thought of this being a big deal but then I began to ask myself: why is this man getting people all into this whole VP choosing process? When was the first time that any presidential candidate got American citizens so involved in something like this?

The closest person to come to mind is the man who challenged Americans to "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." That man was John Fitzgerald Kennedy. He challenged our ways of thinking and inspired Americans to better themselves through hard work, finding our common purpose, and working to realization of that common good.

Barack Obama has from the get go inspired progress-minded individuals to help move America forward. As on many occasions, he has said that "it won't be easy." By that he means the road to financial stability, better education system, jobs in the country, and the list goes on. HE would have to fight the lobbyist in Washington and that is not going to be easy.

That is where WE, the citizens, come in. As Obama has said on several occasions, we are going to have to be willing to get involved in bringing about that change; it might require more taxes on some of us, or tax cuts for others, it might be that we need to examine our spending habits, and dependency on certain resources, like O.I.L. Could we look for alternatives to fossil fuel?

In whatever little ways we can, Barack Obama, in his minute step of getting us excited about his vice presidential nominee via text-messaging, is an inspirational man who is likely to get Americans to search within and find what each can do for America to make her once again the envy of the world.

Obama's thoughtful ways of uniting the people for a common purpose are what get him extra credit in my book. I, no WE, continue to wait for the most anticipated text message of this new millennium.
