Waiting for ER Final Episode

Ann-Marie Walker
ER premiered on September 19, 1994 and soon it will be placed in the TV history books. Watching the last season has been a true walk down memory lane for me. I actually found myself misty eyed watching and reliving moments of ER's past shows. Seeing Benton and Carter again, remembering Mark, tugged at my heart strings.

I have never been an overly emotional person when it comes to a television show. After all it is just a TV show. But ER is different for me. ER has a special place in my heart. When the television show premiered, I was actually working in an emergency room. I was young, eager, and ready to face the world head on. Now I find myself getting older, just like ER. The characters in my youth have long disappeared. Just like the characters of the original ER series have faded away. The doctors I once worked with are gone, just like the familiar faces of Benton, Carter, Mark and Doug.

Who can ever forget Mark's last days? What about the fairy tale ending with Doug and Nurse Hathaway, we were all so happy to see them together. We were devastated when Sandy the fire fighter died, and left Carrie and baby Henry. Remember how sad it was to watch Neela struggle with the pain of losing her husband Gallant in Iraq? How shocked we were when Lucy was killed by a patient, and Carter was stabbed! What about the wedding between Abby and Luka, and the birth of their child, we were there watching then too.

There are so many moments that stand out. Birth, life, death, trauma, all the aspects of life have been featured on the television show ER. Maybe the reason ER has so many fans, is because we can all relate to something from this cast of characters. It reminds of us of our own life. We remember just how fragile life can be and understand the pain of losing someone. It reminds us how important loving and being loved is in our own lives.

As we watch the final episode of ER, we will be watching the end of an era. No more waiting until Thursday to see what happens next on ER. Gone will be the ever so familiar theme song of the show. Many of us will be teary eyed and sad to see it end. One thing that will never change are the memories. In years to come we will all remember watching the final episode. Just like when MASH aired for the last time, we will be huddled around the television screen, watching and bidding our favorite characters goodbye.

I hope all of you will join me, in wishing the cast and characters of ER a fond farewell.
