Waiting for Fireworks on the Fourth of July

Mary Martin
The twinkling lights trailing down through the night sky

Is what I've waited for all day.

The booms that seem to explode even before the colors appear

Let me know where to look next without fear.

A colorful burst of steaming light falls gently down

As loud whistles and crackling noises fill our town.

Another, another, and even another boom followed by light

Fill the sky overlapping to create a most delightful sight.

I am amazed by each new burst of light and sound

Sharing the Ahhhhs and Ohhhhs of everyone around.

This night concludes a day of celebration at the park

Filled with food, fun, and family all waiting for the dark.

That is when our liberty and freedom are symbolized

With red, white and blue explosions glorified

By a final display of Old Glory surrounded by streams Of gold and silver raining down with care

To say that our flag is still there.

I did attend a few of the fireworks displays at the Wooster College, and I did enjoy seeing the fireworks. But for most farm families, the 4th of July could just as easily be hay making time, not picnic time!
