Waiting in the Shadows

Waiting in the Shadows

It waits.

Slithering,
Waiting for me to move
Closer still to those beady eyes
And dripping, poison fangs
Of certain death.

It waits.

Hissing its call,
Noises all around me,
Wondering how many are there
In the shadows, unseen,
Malevolent,

It waits.

With frozen feet
Untamed screams I choke back,
For fear of its discovering
Me standing here.

It waits.

To fool others
Into complacent calm,
Leaving the vicious snake alone
To strike the naive down,
For they don't know

It waits.
