Wake Up Call

Nobody is Immune from the Hysteria

Linda
The fall from grace of Fl. Congressman Mark Foley should serve as a wake up call for America to see the utter insanity of the sex offender laws that he helped to write and get passed.(the Adam Walsh Act http://rpc.senate.gov/_files
/L49HR4427ChldprotBB072006.pdf) If the congressman is found guilty of inappropriate behavior of a minor, he will be a registered sex offender. The irony is not lost on me- instant karma: what goes around comes around. This is a shining example of the registry not working, after all isn't the registry supposed to stop this very thing? He would see first hand the devastating effects of the registry on his life and his family. He himself would see the devastation of the family if they had to move from their house because it was to close to a bus stop or school. He would feel the eyes on him and the whispers behind his back. His loved ones will know the pain and humiliation of having someone you love on the registry. They will feel the fear in the pit of their stomach that a vigilante might target their home. Mr. Foley will see what it is like to find employment being a registered sex offender. Employers do not want their address on the website any more than the offender does.

Wake up America. Is the ex-Congressman a predator? That is what he will be called by now along with the 600,000 other sex offenders. The media and the politicians have misused the word predator so much that the true meaning of the word gets lost. I wonder how President Bush and Mr. Walsh feel having their picture taken with a "predator?" The registry includes all sex-offenders not just the true predators that need to be on the registry. No one nor is one zip code immune from the sex offender hysteria. More and more people and families can get caught up in the long reach of these insane and poorly thought out new sex offender laws. Now this man will know what it is like to have the life sentence that comes with committing any kind of sex offense. Even Mr. John Walsh and President Bush would have to concede that the sex offender registry could not have prevented these events. If a sex offense can occur in the halls of Congress, where is the logic that a sex offender registry is going to protect the American public?

This whole Foley debacle is a perfect metaphor for the truth about sex offenses. How the real threat of a sex offense is the people we know, NOT, the boogieman lurking in the bushes. Foley's folley just amplifies this fact. The picture of Mark Foley with John Walsh and President Bush, at the signing of the bill that is supposed to protect America's youth from sex offenses says it all. Truth is stranger than fiction.

What should happen to Mr. Foley? Should he have to wear a GPS device? Would society be a safer place if he and his family were made to move because of proximity laws? Have these laws accomplished any damn thing? It is time to put an end to the sex offender hysteria. It is time to take a rational approach to sex offenses. Sex offenders are brothers, fathers, sisters, neighbors and colleagues. These laws are HARMING our children and families. Our money is better spent on prevention and rehabilitation. It is time to wake up America. Our collective alarm clock is ringing loud and clear.

    Hi
I have read your blogs, and I am having these exact feelings about Legislation and Process of Re entry

I dont see much good to try and understand the insurmountable labels and pre-determined judgment on some of these "molesters'"

Years ago you were also related to someone who would misuse and abuse any child , and they did it frequently. Society labels them as all perverts now. Not always shall they seem as they are. Too much time lapses between the preliminary hearing and pleas' sentencing and incarceration. These people dint know what the plea will be when they accept it, all they know(in my case ~~ they had a lawyer to sit through all of it with them. ...until the were indeed taken into Custody.

No background checks, no inquiry of the work they do or did...how many people they were around all day long that might flip if they ever knew...Plus the harassment and mental trauma of knowing what waits for you outside of the gates of prison, when you get to re-enter .

The poster "Fallen One - iamthefallen1" is Derek Logue, a registered sexual predator, who lives in Cincinnati. He was convicted of sexual crimes against an 11 year old girl. He was 23 at the time. He says on his website oncefallen.com that his crimes with the 11 year old were consensual. Sickening

Definitely a good piece; having taken time to read the comments I can't really add anything except heap more praise. Just a parting thought: making the distinction between those who are very likely to re-offend and those who are not seems to be the key to making the registry work. So far, the registry does nothing except feed the mass hysteria, create a danger to registrants and their families, and waste a lot of time (and resources) that could be going to do something constructive.

John Walsh is the wrong person to be looking after anyone's kids. He had no idea that his wife was having sex with her live-in lover. He simply could not resist having affairs outside the marriage which he smugly admits to. At the very least there is a morals problem.
After all of the buddy-buddy talk about HIS congressman, Mark Foley, he swears he knew nothing about the personal actions that were going on around him. And the thick-as-theives friendship wasn't all that close.
The camera-loving Walsh did not stare into the lens to denounce Foley but, publicly, he did turn his back. It would be interesting to hear what Foley could tell about Walsh. Wonder how many VIP's have picked out their rehab center?

It is crucial that the whole country understand the erosion of liberties that the Sex Offender Registries have caused. Now those very registries are being used by states and counties to take away people's homes and employment - without cause or redress! It is even being done to American Citizens totally off probation or parole for many years. It is being done to families that have been re-united through years of counseling and approved by judge's orders. It is being done to over 600,000 people, counting their families affected, millions of people...and yet these people, by the Department of Justice's own statistics' are the least likely to re-offend except for murderers. It is the lies told by politians like Mark Foley that have caused citizens to strip the most basic rights from their fellow citizens, in an atmosphere of hate and vigilantism. He is living proof that the real danger to our children is from those who wil committ 96.5% of the new sex crimes- those that have not previ

I'm glad I'm not the only one reveling in this ironic situation. But you know if I was in his shoes I'd have voted against the Adam Walsh False Protection Act. Anyone care to send me picks of this guy with John "cheating heart" Walsh and George "election thief" Bush. Maybe when Ohio's civil registry, where you can now put someone on the sex offender registry without even being convicted of a crime, catches on, and a few of these people get accused then maybe they'll understand what they're doing to us. By the way if someone has that John Walsh transcript where he confessed to Larry King he is a cheater send it to iamthefallen1@yahoo.com. Thanks

This whole situation is insane. The person abovoe me says no one is immune. Well I guess Foley is. Does anyone see him sitting in jail yet? Has he been forced to move? To loose all chance at supporting himself? NO! Of course not. Yea, he's been humilated, too bad he's still rich and out of prison. They need to throw him into prison in the main community of it and see how long he lasts! Make him go throw the "therapy" that other sex offender go through where they are ridiculed and screamed at by the therapist there to help them. He should get every piece of hell he has dished out. I almost wish he was married so he could feel the horror of putting his family through hell too. Almost.. but not quit because I wouldn't want to put another person through it too.

The sex offender hysteria must stop. Sex offender registries should only list people that have proven to be a danger to society. Very serious crimes and repeat offenders should be on the registry. The only thing sex offender registries do now is to further punish people who are abiding by the law. It does NOTHING to prevent further sex crimes. Wake up Amerika!!
