Waking Up to Discover Change

Brandon Elliott
On some mornings, I wake up and instantly hear the bitter sound of change.
The noise it makes is a complicated matter in itself--
Quiet, but deafening.
Soft, but razor-sharp.
Soothing, yet chilling.
Different.

On other mornings, I inhale once through my nose and can smell it's aroma in the air.
Sweet, warm, dead.
Dignified, insecure.
Like cooking a hotdog in a microwave for ten minutes.
Different.

I believe on the last morning of my life, I will feel change.
The way change feels is a matter of opinion, but to me--
relieving, shattering, and constantly redefining.
Just like any other morning.
Unchanged.
