Highly criticized by some for not-so-great employee benefits and wages, the Wal-mart corporation has now publicized the fact that 80 million hourly employees will split more than half a billion dollars this year.
Wal-mart claims that they went public with the information as a way of honoring their employees, not to satisfy critics.
The amount per employee is not known for sure but doing a mathematical calculation of the number of employees and the amount of the shares, it's estimated that each will receive an average of about $651.00.
Employees reported that last year they made between $500-1,000 when bonus time came around.
The amount depended on full or part-time status as well as how much profit the individual stores made that year.
Managers have claimed that some employees have received checks substantially higher than last year
Sam Walton started the employee bonus program in 1986 as a way of rewarding wal-mart "Associates" for their hard work and gives them share holding in the companies high profit earnings.
It definitely gives employees an incentive to push sales and improve customer satisfaction.
Managers often encourage staff to help reach monthly sales goals and have profit charts hung in break rooms as visual reminders as to where their individual store is at.
Wal-mart's corporation employs over 1.34 million people in the U.S. including those who work for Sam's Club.
An estimated 1 million of those are hourly employees who will benefit from the bonus.
While some have claimed that publicizing the information this year about the annual share profits is to make it clear to the world that Wal-mart does care about their employees, other's have said it still doesn't make any difference about how they feel.
Critics still believe that Wal-marts priorities are way off base if you look at the bigger picture.
And while $500-1,000 per employees sounds generous, its peanuts compared to what those in corporate got as a bonus.
For example, according to www.wakeupwalmart.com Chief Executive Lee Scott received a $3.94 million bonus as part of a total compensation package of $15.7 million.
Hard working store employees are what really help Wal-mart function as it should. The hourly staff and management are more often then not underpaid and have poor health insurance benefits. They also are rarely allowed overtime and some end up with their expected hours cut as a way of saving money for the company.
One good change to come out of this is that Wal-mart has claimed that they will now split up the annual bonus money into quarterly payments so that employees won't have to wait a whole year.
Another new program will reward employees with over 20 years at the company an extra week of pay each year.
Customer satisfaction will also mean monetary compensation as this summer Wal-mart will start offering bonus amounts for employees that go above and beyond when helping shoppers at their store.

Post a CommentI got shafted, Walmart gave me zero. They go by how many hours a person works. I have bust my butt with them for 6 months. And got nothing. I heard I had to be at walmart for 6 months in March. I am April. Heck I cannot even get full time. The manager does nothing but put me off, and lame excuses. From "We will get together on it" to I will let you know this has been going on for 4 months. And Pay raises, I got zero. I was to get a 40 cent raise, and all of a sudden it was no. That was when I was there 90 days. And others did get raises. at 90 days.
I do not look anymore I am tired of being disapointed. Walmart knows how to take but they have NO clue how to give. And ever since I got another boss, he has shafted me on hours too.
Just do your work and go home, forget about getting anything from them.
My husband has worked for walmart for three years. At first he would get a $200 bonus each quarter. Now he is lucky if he gets $10. They a minor remod eighteen months ago and while managers are still getting the $200+ bonuses, associates are getting next to nothing. According to corporate it takes a store up to ten months to recover from a major remod, but its been almost double that and the store is doing great even with the economy being slow. Now there is talk of walmart taking away the my share plus bonus to save money. I don't know about anyone else but when you ca go to there public account records and see an increase in profit, removing the my share from all stores seems money hungry to me. It may not effect anyone here (10-20 dollar bonus), but or stores that still give good ones thats just wrong.
i work for walmart as a customer service manager and our bonus's arent that big.not much more than $100.not only that but we were supposed to recieve one last week and didnt.bussiness is great right now despite the economy im not sure what their excuse is.
The math doesn't work out. First, if 80 million people split half a billion dollars, that's about six dollars per person. Second, there are about 300 million people in the U.S. -- and 80 million work at Wal-Mart? That's more than 25% of all Americans (including children).
whats the average bonus for walmart managres across the u.s.
Great article. I have worked for Walmart for 7 years I have always been treated well. The store has undergone a lot of change. I think it stinks all the bad publicity they get. I have also worked at Target now there is a store that does not care about their associates. Working there was a nightmare. I have great medical and Dental coverage. Not every walmart is run the same way It has to do with the Manager or managers in charge.
I worked for Wal-mart for three years and it was a horrible experience. This is just another way to try and work some PR magic. I have experienced the evil first hand - they could care less about their employees.
I think the article is a great one. Very well written! AND as the wife of a ten year Wal-Mart Associate, Wal-Mart does wonderful things for its associates on a regular basis. The company has saved our lives. We were at the bottom of the ladder on every public assistance when my DH started his job there and this year he will file on 6 figures. Please don't take the negativity as a whole. . .not every store is the same.
Well-written article, but Wal-Mart is just an evil corporation. I watched a documentary on them and my "I love Wal-Mart" attitude quickly turned to "I can't believe Wal-Mart did that." They are horrible to employees (despite this bonus), and seem to relish in the fact that when they come in to a town, they positively close down locally-owned mom & pop shops. Their customer service is ridiculous. Every Wal-Mart I've EVER been to (and they are EVERYWHERE in the South), there's always about 4-6 cashiers working and about 40 people trying to checkout. Wal-Mart can afford to staff more cashiers, and they can also most definitely afford to pay their employees more. I bet Sam Walton is turning over in his grave at what these corporate sharks have done to his company.
It's better than nothing but two words spring immediately to mind: WINDOW DRESSING
