"Wal-Mart," the New Hang Out

A College Student Observation

Ken Lyons
"Wal-Mart" or other stores in a small town, and even malls, are slowly becoming the new hang out for various college students in various small towns, where the most fun to have is playing video games such as "Halo" and going to a movie theater, and even then, that can get old if there is absolutely nothing good on to watch! Perhaps just having "Wal-Mart" as the only place to hang out helps students study better.

In large cities where colleges are located, some students may grow weary of studying for that major exam or writing that extensive philosophy paper, and decide to go out and, dare I say it, "party!!?"

There has been research that those who go to college in small towns or simply rural areas tend to do exceptionally well due to the lack of interruption and temptation around them. Besides, what is there to interrupt a college student, let alone a high school student. The only thing is either a convenient store, a mall, and the neighborhood "Wal-Mart" which seems to exist in every single small town, or at least close to one.

Also, how long does the average college student stay in a "Wal-Mart," 20 Minutes, 40 Minutes, maybe an hour at the most!!? The best places to just hang out and pass the time, especially after taking a well earned break, would be the "McDonald's" or other said food place located inside, depending on your location. The electronics section is always good, considering the CD's and the movies that are there. Especially if there is a good sale going on. Of course the clothing section is fine…nothing like a good line of clothing that isn't too overpriced. Of course, that's merely opinion unless you have found something better! Surprisingly, there hasn't been too much trouble with college students hanging out at "Wal-Mart," let alone other young people. At least the choice of hang out is for the most part safer than the side of a street in the middle of the late night.

Along with "Wal-Mart" comes the other choice hangout locations: malls.

For example, in Oklahoma City, "Quail Springs Mall" is full of different college students traveling just to get out of the dorm, apartment or library for a breather! It is almost a past time for college students to shop around for random junk just to keep their minds from overheating from the latest major assignments.

So long stores like "Wal-Mart" and "Target" exist, especially in small towns, there will always be college students within small towns (or even larger cities) that will flock to spend and relax. Who knows, it could be crucial to have lined up MORE fast food places on one wall and clothing and other items sitting on the other.

Otherwise, if your in a large city, and you're a college student, chances are, instead of a "Wal-Mart," your looking at places of the party and clubbing persuasion, and that also depends on the kind of individual you are. If the club scene is not for you, then there is always the "store scene."

  • "Wal-Mart" seems to be located everywhere!!!
  • Malls are also becoming the new college students hang out area! As if they weren't already!!
  • Despite these facts, nothing bad has happened...not yet anyways!
The largest "Wal-Mart" is located in Edmond, Oklahoma, just off of I-35.

I think it should be known that in small towns where there is nothing to do...there's always a party to go to, at least in the ones in Pittsburgh and Latimer County of Oklahoma.

I absolutely love Walmart, which is why I was drawn to your article. You can read magazines, shop for clothes, buy candy and browse through the many CDs and DVDs, all while waiting for your car to be worked on! Walmart is truly a one-stop shopping center with great prices. It beats Kmart and Target :). Although, I must admit that Target is the easiest store to get in and out of. If Walmart works on the speed and efficiency of its checkout and returns center, then it will truly rock.

Don't listen to the others. I agree with you. Walmart is great to hang out. You can play video games for free. Sometimes get free food and it's huge so no one will really notice how long you stay there. Hehe. Bye

And we thought the bars at my school were lousy...Wal-Mart?!?!?! Malls? Are you all stoned teenagers or college students?

personally, I rather chew my leg off and beat myself over my head with the bloody stump than spend hours in a wal-mart, but that's just me...
