Walburg, TX 78673
United States of America
Though the population of the town proper is now around 200 residents, many more people live in the surrounding countryside and people come from miles around to experience one of the village's two famous restaurants and music venues: The Walburg Restaurant and Dale's Essenhaus.
The Walburg Restaurant and Biergarten
The Walburg Mercantile along with a bank were opened in 1882 by the Doering family who had immigrated to America from Walburg, Germany and were responsible for changing the community's name to Walburg. A number of years later the mercantile was closed but two of the families merged to open what is now the Walburg Restaurant and Biergarten in the original mercantile building.
The Walburg Restaurant offers fabulous German food and great local music on Friday and Saturday evenings. The biggest draw (besides the food) is the great outdoor Biergarten located behind the restaurant. The most popular attraction is the home band "The Walburg Boys" which specialize in great german music including polkas and yodeling but also cover great country music and the "chicken dance song".
The Walburg Boys are led by the Restaurant's owner Ron Tippelt who originally hails from Munich, Germany. When the Walburg Boys are not in residence, the Biergarten has other great local bands to entertain up to 800 people in a completely family friendly environment. The dancers just dance right around all the kids without complaint and the kids all love it.
Dale's Essenhaus
Across the street, another famous venue is Dale's Essenhaus which also has a large outdoor music and dancing area. Dale's was founded in 1987 and is home to Dale's Famous Walburger which features grilled onions but the other Texas food on the menu is also great, particularly the fried catfish, beer battered onion rings and daily lunch specials.
Dale's has great bands each weekend in a family friendly atmosphere that includes a playscape area and sand pits for the kids. Dale's Essenhaus also puts on a spectacular fireworks show prior to the 4th of July which can be seen for miles around by the hillside residents.
Whichever restaurant and dance arena you choose, Walburg is definitely worth a visit.
