Walgreens Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich

Consumer Product Review

Thomas J McCabe
For the past several months, I have been seeing the Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich in the freezer case at my local Walgreens Pharmacy. When I saw that these Walgreens private label sandwiches were on sale a couple of days ago, I didn't hesitate in buying one of them.

After eating this frozen sandwich, I think it would be a good product to review. Presented here, as a service to the consumer at large, is one food writer's product review of the Walgreens Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich.

Size
The net weight of the standard - sized package of Walgreens Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich is 7 ounces. According to the product's nutrition facts label, one sandwich counts as one serving.

In physical size, this sandwich is not huge, but it is fairly large. This sandwich measures approximately six or seven inches in length and it is piled pretty high with sliced beef.

Price
The regular retail price charged for one seven ounce Walgreens Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich at Hartford, Connecticut area Walgreens Pharmacies is approximately $2.99. When I purchased one of these sandwiches a couple of days ago, the sale price that I paid was $2.50.

The regular price of this beef cheese steak sandwich seems reasonable to me, after eating one of the sandwiches, but the sale price of $2.50 seems even more reasonable.

Texture
This sandwich offers a pleasing overall mouth feel. The fresh bread roll is similar to a grinder, or sub roll in texture. Speaking from experience, it is easy to overcook this sandwich in a microwave oven. It is best to follow the cooking instructions carefully.

The beef in this sandwich is actually very flavorful. It is definitely real beef, with no fat, gristle or mystery component present. It is approriately chewy and seems like good quality meat. Just the right amount of melted American cheese, not too much and not too little, is featured in this sandwich and it helps to hold the item together.

Nutritional Facts
Walgreens Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich contains 480 calories, with 200 calories from fat, per one sandwich serving. This tasty sandwich also contains 13 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 22 grams total fat, 80 mg of cholesterol, 1190 mg of sodium, 41 grams total carbohydrates, 0 grams of dietary fiber, 3 grams of sugars and 34 grams of protein, per one sandwich serving.

Taste / Flavor
The fresh bread roll really does taste quite fresh and it smells like freshly baked bread when it heats. The thinly sliced beef, which appears to be roast beef, actually tastes like real, fresh beef. The American cheese marries well with the beef and bread roll, but I can't help but feel that the sandwich is missing something, specifically, onions and peppers.

While the Walgreens Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich tastes very good the way it is, it would taste even better with the peppers and onions that are usually served on cheesesteak sandwiches. On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign this sandwich a rating of 8.90.

Packaging
The Walgreens Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich is packaged in a rectangular black, white and red cardboard box. The front label features a large photo of the enclosed sandwich and the rear label lists all pertinent ingredient, nutritional and heating information and instructions. Inside the box, the sandwich is further packaged in a plastic film bag.

Overall Rating
This frozen sandwich is a very tasty item, but could benefit from the inclusion of some onions and peppers. Ready to eat in just minutes, this sandwich is also fairly reasonably - priced. The Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich is stocked and sold at Walgreens Pharmacies everywhere. If your local Walgreens Pharmacy doesn't stock this item, try asking the manager if it can be ordered.

Would I purchase and eat the Walgreens Cafe W Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich again ? Yes. This product is recommended.

I was so disgusted with my first bight of this sandwich I had to spit it out. Maybe if you heat it in the oven rather than the micro wave the bun wouldn't turn into a hardened torpedo. The Beef Cheesesteak part tasted bad to me so watch out.. personally I think it was more soybean than anything.
