Walk Out Cancer

Several years ago communities started fighting back against this terrible disease called Cancer. The small town of Selinsgrove in Central Pennsylvania holds this event the first weekend of June. This is held at the beautiful Susquehanna University Athletic Track. We start the preparations in January with a kick off party and the committee gets started.

Teams are formed with much creativity to fund raising events. Unique names are given to the teams by their members. Then the fun begins and I do say fun because along with the hard work in the end there is fun to be had. Teams consist of anywhere from 10 to 20 walkers and someone should be on the track the full 24 hours from your team .

Registration fees start at $100. Make a goal for the team and go from there. My team is called Healing Hands because we are from a health care facility. We sell our own t-shirts as a main fund raiser with our logo on . We have lunches at work and bake sales. Raffle for a quilt., Car Washes etc.

Monthly meetings with the committee and captains to organize the activities. We have tent sites for sleeping over and resting. We can also sell items from our tents.Decorate your tent to coincide with the theme. Jewelry, crafts and food items are available etc. Churches provide donated items for auctions and root beer floats. Children's teams provide games,We also have talent shows and live music for entertainment .

Luminaries are placed in honor or in memory of our loved ones who have suffered from all types of Cancer. We start the walk with the survivors taking the first steps . This is emotional for all of us . We light candles and sing Amazing Grace and hold our candles in the air.

Has your community started fighting back? We are not taking Cancer with ease anymore and I think that it is proof. Statistics show more survivors from Breast Cancer then 10 years ago. Colon Cancer detected earlier do to new equipment and technology . Children surviving leukemia,brain tumors. We are able to provide care and research due to money raised. My new Project this year and a Cookbook , With my team working together we are going to get started now so we raise double our goal for next year.
