Walking as a Fun Summer Activity

Walking is a great summer activity for an individual, a group or the entire family. There are so many activities that can be incorporated with walking to make it more pleasurable. Here are a few activities, as well as a few tips.

You can walk at a park, on a trail, around a neighborhood, up the steps of a large monument and through a wooded area. The places to walk are only limited by your imagination. You can walk at the zoo, on the fairgrounds, around a lake and/or beside a canal. And, most of these places won't charge just for walking. The only expense that you might encur is the purchase of a good pair of walking shoes. As we get older, our feet become more sensitive and a good firm yet comfortable pair of gym shoes is important.

Have water nearby while you walk. If you are walking on a bike or walking path, make sure that water is in your car or someplace that you can quickly access. We don't think of walking as a tiring activity, but it certainly can be. Sometimes it is more exhausting than we think.

Limber up your muscles a bit before walking. This may take five or ten minutes, but it is a good idea to do some ankle rolls and very light stretching before you start walking. In addition, a good fifteen minute stretch after walking is a good idea. It helps you cool down your muscles.

Bring a jacket just in case of an emergency. If you walk fast enough that you will sweat, it is nice to bring a jacket with you so that you can put it on during the cooling down phase of your walk.

For children, it is a good idea to make a map. Point out destinations, stores, and anything that might spark a child's interest. Children can also take a camera. You never know when and where you will find something worthy of a photo. You can even play counting or singing games with your children. If you allow your children to bring noise makers, they can stray a bit and you can still hear where they are. Walkie-talkies are always fun for children. It will give them a bit of freedom, yet you can incorporate this into your walk. Experiment to see how far the walkie-talkies reach and what might hinder reception.

Walk with your dog. Any dog will enjoy the walk and it is a good time to teach your pet good leash manners. You will probably get tired before your dog does. Of course, remember to bring enough water for the dog and bags to pick up the dogs waste. No one likes to step in it and it is public law to dispose of your pet's feecees.

If you are walking as an individual, you can play music or listen to a book on CD. Thus, you are stimulating your mind and body at the same time.

Safety is also an issue when walking, especially is you are walking on trails and doing so alone. Actually, if possible, it is a good idea to walk with a group of companions. If you walk alone, always carry your cell phone. Another helpful hint is to always carry a whistle. You need a way to call for help. Sometimes, reception is not available when walking among many trees. Be prepared for anything on your walk. If you walk for long distances, it will be advantageous for you to bring a first aid kit.

Walking is a great way to exercise and enjoy the outdoors. It is also inexpensive. There are some safety tips that should be observed when walking: especially when walking alone. However, it is one of the most enjoyable and inexpensive outdoor activities.
