Wall Décor Ideas for Rooms with High Ceilings

High ceilings add visual space, light and architectural details to any room, and that was one of the things which appealed to me when we were house hunting. Decorating the wall space in rooms with high ceilings can be challenging, and there aren't rules for it either, according to Stefan of Interior Design Architecture . Use these wall décor ideas as a starting point for decorating your rooms with high ceilings.

Look for Non-Traditional Items

Emily Henderson, star of HGTV's Secret From A Stylist , look for non-traditional items to fill the wall space. Non-traditional items can cost less than large scale artwork, add interest to the room and since there are no rules you can't go wrong in thinking outside the traditional wall décor box.

I have worked with fabric for a number of years and I knew I could custom make quilt to fit the wall space. The quilt added everything I wanted to the room; personalization, color, scale, design, sound absorption (often needed in cavernous-like, high ceiling rooms) and the quilt is a great conversation piece.

Hanging Fabric on the Wall

If you're not adept with needle and thread, a tapestry or graphic designed area rug might fit the space. Fabric items such as a quilt, tapestry or area rug can be suspended from the wall without putting holes in the fabric and sometimes without putting holes in the wall. A large dowel rod can be used to hang fabric, with minimal holes to the wall and no holes placed in the fabric. Velcro wall fasteners are another hanging option, if the fabric items are not overly heavy. Framing fabric items will give them a more upscale and finished look, but it will make the décor item heavier.

Salvage Yards

Another thing HGTV's Emily Henderson suggests is visiting architectural salvage yards for decorating inspiration. A large sign, an old door or iron gate may just give the room décor look you want. Any large scale item will draw the eye up and fill out the space, and since there are no decorating rules, if you like the item, that's all that matters Ebay and thrift shops are other places to look for just the right piece to fill out the large, empty space. Adding a light or two on the wall decor item can provide the finishing touch and make the once empty room with a high ceiling feel cozy and comfortable.
