Walmart Barcode Switcher Caught Again

Have you seen this woman in your local Walmart store?

Her name is Jena Ayn Barnhill, 33, of Ponca City, Oklahoma and she is scheduled to appear in Kay County District Court on Sept. 17 on a felony charge of obtaining property by use of false Universal Price Code Label, (UPC) after two or more felony convictions.

Barnhill was arrested by Ponca City police on June 3 at Walmart.

According to the police affidavit, a Walmart security employee spotted and recognized Barnhill from e-mails that have been sent out to Walmart stores in the Oklahoma and Kansas regions showing her returning merchandise.

In 2007, she was caught in an Oklahoma City Walmart switching labels on air purifiers.

On this day in store number 823, Walmart security says that Barnhill switched barcodes on a salt water pool system, and that the merchandise scanned for $15 instead of $199.

The security employee said he followed Barnhill to the pool area where she selected a salt water pool system, placed it in the shopping cart upside down, then placed her hand over the UPC barcode and pushed down and away from her and back, smoothing the label down to the box.

She then had her young daughter set on the box.

Security then followed Barnhill to the grocery department where she selected several items including two Feta Cheese that she placed under to her purse.

Barnhill then made her way to register 20 and security was in place.

Security workers say that the $199 pool system scanned for $15 and Barnhill's total transaction totaled $37.02.

Barnhill used food stamps and a VIsa card to pay.

She was stopped outside brought back into the store and the police were called.

The cheese was still under her purse.

She was later arrested, charged and released on $500 bond.

The Oklahoma Court Network shows that Barnhill was arrested two times in Oklahoma City in 2004 on a charge of possession of a stolen credit card and a second time on possession of methamphetamine.

In 2007, she was charged in Oklahoma City with obtaining property under false pretenses and possession of a fictitious drivers license.

On April 27, 2010, Barnhill was arrested by Oklahoma City police and charged with unlawfully using a computer network for the purpose of obtaining money and other things of value by use of false and fraudulent representation.

When I worked in retail, I blasted the part time kids who worked in my department for throwing away the lamp boxes. Customers wanted them when giving lamps as gifts. The boys swore they were not discarding them. I accidently found a lamp box filled with CDS and other electronic equipment hidden in the towel department. Manager said to leave it there. Found out the night crew who stocked shelves were filling my missing lamp boxes with merchandise, having a friend come into the store in the morning to purchase the "lamp". After that incident cashiers had to open any unsealed boxes to check to see what was inside. The night crew was fired.

Why do people risk their lives, reputations, freedom for something such as this? I cannot understand a person wanting to take this type chance. Do they consider what or how this will affect their child/children? I look in the mirror each day and pray that my sons can look at me and be proud of their mother.
