from a small company in Lenexa, Kansas. For over two and a half
decades Flagler Productions was the preferred video production company
to gather footage of Walmart's elite. About 2 years ago Walmart
suddenly quit using Flagler Productions.
Walmart has a reputation for monopolizing a company's effort and
Flagler Productions was no exception to this rule. Over ninety percent
of the small companies business came from it's huge corporate client.
Usually when Walmart drops a company like they did Flagler Productions
it's the end of the road for the business. In this instance, Walmart
is the company likely to be on the loosing end. Flagler Productions
has just opened up its video archive of over 15,000 tapes of Walmart
footage with a goal of selling these clips. Such a treasure trove of
historical information is a huge boon to many groups ranging from
lawyers to documentary filmmakers and even labor individuals. Gene
Graham Jr claims that Walmart has no control over any of this video.
Flagler Production's founder Mike Flagler claims he was hired with a
handshake to help create a library of the yearly events Walmart held
for managers and shareholders. This expanded to other video records
such as entertainment events and sales meetings.
One of the more interesting clips available show a executive vice
president of Walmart urging store managers to oppose unionization for
employees during a 2004 meeting. Another clip shows Sam Walton at a
1991 meeting declaring the now presidential candidate Hillary Clinton
was "one of us." These videos provide an uncensored look into the
behavior of Walmart executives that few of us would ever have seen if
this library of video had not been made available to the public. It is
an unprecedented look into the machinations of a big corporation's
higher echelon. Walmart is not pleased that Flagler Productions has
released this library for the world to see. I'm quite certain they are
concerned about legal implications that could cost them enormous sums
of money. A mere drop in the bucket for a corporation who at one time
was responsible for five percent of the GNP of China.
Flagler Productions has offered to sell the library to Walmart for an
undisclosed sum claimed to be in the millions. However he turned down
Walmart's counter offer of only five hundred thousand. Attorneys from
around the nation have indicated interest in the video archive to
support ongoing and future suits against Walmart. Here's hoping
Walmart gets what it deserves.
