Wal-Mart Discontinues Sewing Section

Cross Stitch Supplies No More

Sexy Mama
I have been an avid cross stitch enthusiast for some time now. I like nothing more than running to the local store to pick up a new pattern or some thread for an existing pattern that I already own. I have done baby feet for all three of my boys, and my friends baby that is not yet here. I have done bugs for another friend's baby because she wanted to do the nursery in bugs. I thoroughly enjoy making and sharing my craft.

These gifts of love allow me to be creative as well as create a lasting memory for mother and child. Wal-Marts decision to close their sewing department has me very angry. While not the largest selection, Wal-Mart is the closest store that carries the supplies that I require. If not for Wal-Mart I have to drive 20 miles in either direction to reach another store with any kind of selection.

I initially heard a rumor from a friend that they were closing down their sewing department. She had been shopping at another Wal-Mart and noticed that their supplies were marked down. I was looking for floss online and at www.DMC-usa.com and found a brief article on Wal-Mart and their decision to stop selling sewing supplies. While my local Wal-Mart has not lowered the prices on their items they are not reorder either. The DMC Floss is down to a handful of colors and there are very few cross stitch kits available.

I feel that this is a great loss on Wal-Mart's part because I do all my shopping there and spend about $115.00 a week at their store. If they start getting rid of the items that I shop there for in addition to my groceries I will shop for my groceries at another store. By getting rid of my crafting extra's they are making it necessary to shop at multiple stores anyway, I can just as easily get my groceries elsewhere.

A good thing that has come from this is I have begun shopping online and found several useful sites that also provide for my needs. The down side to this is I have to order them and then wait for them to come in. Some of these sites are www.joann.com, www.DMC-usa.com , and by entering DMC Floss on my Google search engine I received many available options.

Another down side I have found is the elderly woman I met the last time I was in Wal-Mart. She was commenting on the scarceness of their available product. I shared my information about them selling out their sewing items. The elderly woman was very distressed by this because she doesn't drive and does not have internet access. She shops for her items at Wal-Mart because it is close enough for her to walk. I shared with her the websites I had found and suggested she use the internet at the local library to make her purchases and have them shipped to her home. I hope Wal-Mart is listening because one customer can reach millions these days and opinions are shared.

Too many sewing stores are closing. No WalMart will stop offering fabrics and notions too!?! This sewing enthusiast says, "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!"

I, too, buy sewing items from Wal-Mart. What a shame that they won't keep this department. What are they going to fill this area in with anyway? More electronics?
