Wal-Mart is one of the largest retail companies in the world today, and they do a lot for their communities. Many people are not aware of how much Wal-Mart really does because all you hear about is the bad stuff, like discrimination, wages, or someone got hurt. However, with all bad stuff there does come some good within companies, and Wal-Mart is no different.
I am not an employee of Wal-Mart, but I do have family that does work for Wal-Mart and get to hear all the stories and one of these stories really touched me.
My husband came home from work back in December and was upset, and this day was different than other days. This day was the shop with a cop, where our Wal-Mart gave out gift cards to underprivileged children. They would than get to go shopping with one of our local police officers, who volunteered their time.
My husband comes home and is telling me about the shop with a cop, how it went. One little boy bought a hairbrush for his mother because she did not own one. Other children bought toothpaste, shampoo, and other basic necessities - not one bought toys except one.
This was the little boy that really got to my husband. He was buying groceries for his family out of his Christmas gift card. His mother was off to the side, as was managers watching him shop for food.
It broke everyone's heart, including the store manager who grabbed a shopping cart and began to fill it up with groceries. He then took the car t to the mother and she immediately began to cry.
There were all these people standing around, the store manager, managers, my husband, and all were near tears. To see such joy, and happiness, on someone's face over groceries was very emotional.
I do not know what the little boy bought after that, but hearing this story brought tears to my eyes. My heart goes out for this family, and others like them. People like them, try very hard to survive but they can't for one reason or another.
We, my family, are not wealthy. We get by, and even have a few luxuries, and than you hear a story like this and it really makes you appreciate what you have. I may not have the money Wal-Mart has to sponsor events or donate TV's or bikes, but I can say anything I donate, I make sure it goes to someone for free.
I hope in reading this, that some will look differently at Wal-Mart. I am not saying they are a hero or anything, but with the bad there is always some good! My local Wal-Mart has shown our community that on more than one occasion!
