Wal-Mart and Michelle Obama Working Together to Change How America Eats

Pat Anthony
Michelle Obama and Wal-Mart will be working together in an attempt to change the way people eat. Most are aware Michelle Obama has a strong interest in the obesity issue in the United States, especially when it comes to children.

Wal-mart agrees with Michelle Obama on the salt, sugar and fat issues when it comes to foods. Wal-Mart will attempt to lower or eliminate the fats that are considered unhealthy in many foods that are sold with the Wal-Mart Great Value label. Also, Wal-Mart foods will contain less salt and sugar. The store plans to cut the prices of vegetables and fruits as well, making these more affordable.

Several other companies, including ConAgra, have stated they are making efforts to offer better food choices by eliminating fats, salts and additives in some of their products. As some state the changes will not be complete until as late as 2015, consumers will have to make some changes on their own before then if they are concerned about health issues.

Buying foods that are whole are accepted as a better choice than buying packages of mixes that are intended to be a meal with the addition of liquid or some other product. Real foods that are cooked at home from scratch are a healthier choice and always have been. These are available at Wal-Mart. However, as the population becomes busier, the easier foods continue to be the first choice for many.

Michelle Obama and Wal-Mart or other grocery store chains can't make changes in private homes. While most individuals applaud the effort, they realize they have to make the right choices about healthy living for their families.

Cooked from scratch also tend to be lowest in cost :) I wonder if we'll see many new items, or just fewer uhealthy ones?

Great that Wal-Mart is stepping up.

It still boils down to reading the labels. If consumer don't buy products that are unhealthy the store will not keep ordering those items. We need to police ourselves and not have govt. do more of that.

Appreciate the info, but not turned on by the fact that the government will now tell us what to eat!
